Tavira

Often regarded as one of the most beautiful towns on the Algarve, Tavira sits on the eastern Algarve between Faro and the Spanish border, in the middle of Ria Formosa Natural Park, and is the perfect place to escape from the crowds of the larger western Algarve resorts.

Formerly a major trading port and remaining fiercely proud of its maritime heritage, Tavira straddles the Gilão river with several picturesque bridges linking the east and west banks. The maze-like cobbled streets of the old town lead to shady squares revealing typically ceramic tiled buildings, a wealth of independent restaurants plus plenty of souvenir shops and boutiques. At least 21 churches nestle within the town limits, and echoes of Roman and Moorish residents of the past are evident wherever you look.

A day at the beach is a little harder won in Tavira, but well worth the effort. The most popular beach is a spectacular 11km long stretch of sand on Ilha de Tavira (Tavira Island) and is accessible by a public ferry that departs the centre of town every 30 minutes or so in high season, or by water taxi. Close to the landing pier beachgoers will find plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, sports facilities and loungers for rent, while those who prefer the desert island feeling just need to venture a little further along the beach to find peace & solitude.

Popular things to do in and around Tavira include a visit to the town’s ruined castle and botanic garden, the unique and delightful Camera Obscura that inhabits the old water tower, TukTuk tours of the local area, and boat or walking trips out into the natural park and saltpans - a real treat for bird watchers with the possibility of catching sight of several interesting species including Greater Flamingos. .
